Julian, California,
The Original Cabin at Strawberry Hill

|
The
Cabin at Strawberry Hill in Julian California,
your quintessential "cabin in the woods" is located
on its own one acre plus
in the small, quiet community of Pine Hills.
Picture a redwood cabin with a deep blue metal roof,
... perched on a hill above the woods and
wild strawberries with views over the treetops
from the Cuyamaca Peaks to the Pacific ocean.
One great room with a full kitchen, a screened porch with a deck,
and a special bath with claw-footed tub: a Western version of
the Walden experience.

Along the East wall we have provided a
complete kitchen with a fully functional 1923 side-oven gas stove
called "Alcazar" (the oven thermostat is still "right
on") a microwave, toaster oven, 6 cubic foot refrigerator,
coffee maker, and RED sink set into two-inch thick Canary Wood....the
oiled finish brings out reds and yellows ... Pans hang on the
wall and dishes and glassware rest on shelves below. We provide
the basics like coffee and teas, fresh eggs, breads and spices,
but you are able to cook for yourselves when you feel like it.
A wonderfully nostalgic kitchen/dining table from the thirties
tucks into its own area with a romantic dimmed droplight for
that special meal...

and, then, there
is the famous most comfortable bed... we get more comments on
that than any other...
a quality, pillow-top, California King on simple pedestal frame...
flannel sheets and feather comforter in winter, high count cotton
sheets with light comforter in the summer....

Moving
right along we come to a favorite part: Four French doors in
the curved wall open to a full-width screened porch with two
sitting areas and enough room to roll out a futon for summer
sleeping. The metal roof is exposed (not insulated) in the porch
area, making summer rains mesmerizing and hail storms exciting!
In the winter, or on the chilly days of spring and fall, storm
blinds can be dropped so one can still spy on the deer herd grazing
below. We counted fourteen - three bucks, four does, and a bunch
of fawns - this spring ! |

The seven-walled bathroom
is done in spruce and pine with a grand little claw-footed tub,
brass shower fixtures, and an antique-eclectic wash stand (the
basin and fixtures are French - porcelain, marble, silver - but
the stand seems more related to an early American sewing machine
than a sink) anyway, it works quite well and fits nicely. Towel
racks, hooks and the like are once again of manzanita to keep
some continuity with the woods.
The stereo remote is
an added plus... now, if we could just automate the coffee maker.
The Cabin at Strawberry
Hill may be just the answer
when you need to escape the fast pace of the City.
