Astrophotographs, a catalog

Chuck Kimball

into amateur astronomy about as long as I can remember, which includes the great Leonid storm of 1946 (I think)... or it might have been the Draconids a year earlier... My first real telescope was a Meade 60mm .... my first image was of Hally's using that same scope on a plywood barn door arrangement (described in S&T back then). Made quite a few images with that thing, then lept three quanta to the Meade LX 200.... future shock....but a good choice...

These photographs, for the most part, were made at my observatory at the Artists' Loft B&B in Julian, CA. The third image, Hale-Bopp 180mm, was made with the help of Mike Leigh at Observer's Inn (www.observersinn.com) over on the other side of the hill. Mike hand-guided an 8-inch LX 10, I just opened the shutter on the Nikon... and, by the way, Mike and Caroline host sky tours for the public, and many of our guests have visited.... you can stay here and still have a tour, just call us and we'll make the arrangements....

The image of NGC6946 was taken at our former very dark sky site in Blue Lake (northern CA)...Most of the images were made with my Meade 10-inch f6.3 LX200 telescope, sometimes operating at f4 as noted, guided by a pictor 201XT autoguider on a Meade 2045S riding piggyback. Some, noted 180mm or 105 mm, were taken with the Nikon riding piggyback on the main scope. A couple more, M16 Pictor and color pictor were taken with the Meade Pictor 216 imaging camera at prime focus on the LX 200. My film of choice for most of the images was Kodak's PMC (discontinued in 1999), sometimes hypered, sometimes not, a few are with Kodak PPF and a very few with other films.... More info will come with the individual images as time permits.... Apologies for the rather random "north is somewhere, not necessarily up" approach to my display.... I plan to slowly clean the catalog up as time permits.
